Deep under the water, the last air bubble escaped from Steve. He closed his eyes, knowing he wouldn’t make it to shore. As the darkness engulfed him, he sunk.
Steve awoke to a sharp pain in his side as he was thrown against something hard, if it weren’t for his desperate need to breathe, he would have been left breathless at the magnificent sight before him.
The ocean he knew and had been exploring for as long as he can remember, had saved him, he was in an unknown land surrounded by unknown structures. This was nothing like the villages he’d explored before, these buildings were made from coral and rare gems.
A great shadow came upon him, terrified, he turned his head to the sky. There above him was a fish, not unlike the fish he used to catch in colour, but so far apart in size. As it swam passed, he felt the pull of the current under it’s fins. It was then he truly took in his surroundings. The sun seemed to have no problem breaking through the fathoms of water between him and the surface, the place was full of vibrant colours and wildlife, most he’d never seen before.
There is a civilisation here, he realised, With people and animals. All under the water.
Without pain in his side Steve made his way to the official looking building at the heart of this wonderland. Within it’s towering walls, he found the source of the coral that’s bursting through the building’s roof.
Steve in his curiosity, explores the perimeter of the building and then, of the new land he’s found. He discovers that the further from the central coral he travels, the weaker and weaker he feels, his need for oxygen begins to return and he struggles to fight against the crushing pressure of the ocean above him.
The coral keeps this land safe, protected.
And now it protects me too.
